When planning a migration to SAP HANA, it is also a good time to re-think the organization’s BI architecture.
HANA platform like no SAP system before it allows for integrating tools and technologies outside of the SAP universe. This opens up new possibilities for both improving the current data management and introducing innovative solutions for data visualization or forecasting. And since all the groundwork has to be done anyway during the migration project, why not go the extra mile and take the business intelligence to the next level.
Most of our customers use this chance to think about their existing business intelligence landscape and how to design their future architecture. They take a closer look at the components that might be already outdated or not used anymore, but they also think about the new requirements they couldn’t meet up until now , e.g. to connect non-SAP source systems. Now is the perfect time to make those decisions and build a robust BI architecture.
Offloading data to a cheap storage and connecting other data sources
First thing to consider is finding a cheaper storage. Since HANA is quite expensive, many SAP users decide on outboard as a secondary storage and use Hadoop for it. It makes sense to build a new data lake where all mass data is stored in a cheap way. With Hadoop in place, the are some additional options that are worth looking into, for example connecting sensor data with other unstructured data sources. Other frequently considered use cases include data science and integration of machine learning and deep learning into the future BI ecosystem.
New data visualization tools for reporting
And when looking at the front-end side, there are many new elegant tools for reporting available. Today, ODBC interface offers the possibility to connect data visualization solutions such as Tableau, Qlik or PowerBi. It is now easy to run them directly on BW on HANA, and you don’t have to rely on the still limited possibilities of the SAP Analytics Cloud.
Mature technologies for planning and forecasting
Last not least, mature technologies for corporate and financial planning are now entering the SAP ecosystem. Companies such as Cognos or Oracle take advantage of new HANA interfaces which make it easier for them to connect to SAP. In this way, the SAP users can tap into advanced technologies for forecasting or cash flow planning.
Having all the new business intelligence possibilities available, it’s not an easy call to decide where to invest. Datavard is appreciated by its customers not only as a partner who can provide sustainable solutions for the lean approach and data integration of their BI systems. We are often sought after as pilots who offer assistance in the design of future BI architectures and provide valuable support in the selection and prioritization of new BI components.
