At a glance: merging three SAP ERP systems
Infinera, a California-based global supplier of optical transmission equipment, acquired Coriant and faced a challenge of merging Coriant’s two SAP ERP systems into Infinera’s own SAP ERP system. Datavard was responsible for merging the master data and customizing data from the two source systems into the target system. We successfully completed a complex technical merge and data harmonization on the fly. With the SLO approach, the go-live for all Master Data and configuration took less than one day, saving weeks of manual work.
Working against the time with automation
To complete the merge, the active business units from Coriant had to be set up in the Infinera system, with their configuration, master data and open transactions.
The key challenge in merging the three systems was the desired timeline. Infinera wanted to finish the merge of the three SAP systems in six months. With a classical approach of manually creating the missing organizational units and processes in the target system, this timeline was not feasible. In order to meet the ambitious deadline, we chose a highly automated approach for bringing over configuration and master data using Datavard tools and in-house expertise.
Technical approach and solutions used
Using the Datavard Transformation Suite, the Datavard team was able to migrate all relevant configuration settings and master data from the two Coriant source ERP systems into the Infinera target ERP system.
During the migration, we had to move only data and settings that were going to be used forward in the Infinera system. To do so, we implemented complex selection criteria for both configuration and master data.
Using the mass migration tools from Datavard, the relevant configuration settings from Coriant’s ERP systems could be mass migrated into the target system. As part of this mass migration for configuration, the settings were upgraded to the latest ECC Enhancement Package version. Bringing over the source system configuration with a mass migration allowed Infinera to save time that would otherwise have to be spend on manually configuring the target system.
The migration of master data using the Datavard Transformation Suite allowed a flexible migration approach that ensured data consistency by applying one set of conversion rules and selection criteria across all master data to be migrated. As part of the data migration, certain objects had to be transformed to fit the processes of the new Infinera target system. Due to the parallel processing capabilities of the Datavard tools, the actual master data migration for two systems, including all configuration settings, took less than 24 hours.
The result: actual migration in less than 24 hours
By migrating both the SAP configuration settings from the two sources systems, Infinera was able to bring down the overall project timeline that would have otherwise had to be spend on blue-printing and manually setting up customizing and configuration. This allowed Infinera to stay on track and complete the project in the original timeframe.
Due to the parallel processing capabilities of the Datavard tools, the actual master data migration for two systems, including all configuration settings, took less than 24 hours.
